Mosaic and terrazzo are often grouped together because both can create a small-format or aggregate-rich surface, but they behave differently in a project. Confirm what the product is made from, how it is mounted, where it can be installed and how the finished surface will be maintained.

Mosaic And Terrazzo Tiles in an Australian project setting

Clarify what the product actually is

Ask whether the surface is ceramic, porcelain, glass, natural stone, cement-based terrazzo or another composite. Record the module, sheet backing, thickness, edge, shade variation and recommended adhesive. A catalogue name is not enough to specify the complete system.

Draw the sheet and the joints

Small pieces still need a full layout. Show the sheet repeat, perimeter cuts, niches, drains, corners and changes of direction. Confirm whether the joints line up with the visible grout or are hidden by the sheet backing. Keep spare sheets from the same batch for later repairs.

Decision What to check
Substrate Flatness, moisture, movement, membrane and load
Surface Slip, pores, aggregate, finish, sealing and staining
Installation Sheet alignment, adhesive, grout, curing and edge detail
Care Cleaning chemistry, resealing, patching and replacement pieces

Approve the finished sample

View several sheets under the project lighting and inspect the grout colour. Terrazzo and natural-looking products can vary from one batch to another; a single tile may not show the distribution of aggregate or the amount of visual repetition.

Questions to resolve before ordering

Are mosaic sheets easier to install than individual pieces?

They can speed alignment, but the backing, sheet repeat, cuts and joints still need careful setting out.

Does terrazzo always need sealing?

The requirement depends on the exact composition and finish. Follow the product documentation.

Can mosaic be used on a shower floor?

Only when the selected product, slip information, adhesive, grout and waterproofing system suit that exposure.

Evidence boundary: Exact product suitability, Australian requirements, pricing and installation responsibility depend on the selected system and project. Check current manufacturer documents and obtain advice from the relevant Australian building professional before approval.

Send the product code, sheet size, room plan, drain details and preferred finish through the Forge contact page.
