Choose tile colour from the room’s fixed materials and light, not from a screen image. Compare undertone, surface finish, grout, pattern variation and maintenance using full-size samples beside cabinetry, paint, stone, timber and metal.

| Family | Common effect | Check |
|---|---|---|
| White and cream | Light, quiet background | Undertone, glare and visible debris |
| Grey | Neutral or architectural base | Blue, green or brown undertone |
| Black and charcoal | Depth and contrast | Dust, water marks, heat and lighting |
| Blue and green | Colour identity and natural association | Batch variation and adjacent warm finishes |
| Terracotta and brown | Warmth and material character | Porosity, sealers and timber coordination |
View floor samples flat and wall samples vertical. Check daylight from different orientations and the actual evening colour temperature. The Australian Government’s YourHome lighting guide explains daylight, task light and colour-temperature considerations. Grazing light emphasises texture; high reflection can make a pale tile appear brighter.
Ask how many graphic faces or tonal grades are supplied. Open multiple cartons and distribute noticeable pieces. Photograph the approved sample arrangement when strong variation is part of the design.
Matching grout reduces the visual grid. Contrast creates graphic emphasis and exposes alignment. Use a cured sample because wet grout and screen colours can mislead.
Light, low-contrast surfaces can reduce visual breaks, but layout and lighting also matter.
They can coordinate through undertone or material without being identical.
Grey often carries a cool or warm undertone that becomes visible beside other finishes.
It can show pale dust, lint and water marks; test the actual finish.
After the tile and fixed finishes, using a cured sample.
